CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of more than a hundred phytocannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. Unlike THC, it does not produce intoxication.
What CBD actually is
It is studied for its interaction with the human endocannabinoid system — a regulatory network involved in sleep, mood, immune response, appetite and pain perception. Most CBD products on the market today are derived from industrial hemp, which is legally defined in the United States as cannabis containing no more than 0.3% THC by dry weight.
That single legal definition has shaped the entire modern CBD industry. It is the reason hemp-derived gummies, oils, capsules, vapes and topicals can be sold widely, while marijuana-derived products containing higher THC remain restricted to state-licensed dispensaries. Understanding that distinction is the first step to evaluating any CBD product you encounter.
How CBD works in the body
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is one of the most widely distributed signaling systems in the human body. It uses two main receptor families — CB1 (concentrated in the brain and central nervous system) and CB2 (concentrated in immune tissue) — along with endogenous lipid messengers called endocannabinoids. CBD does not bind strongly to either receptor. Instead, it appears to modulate the system more indirectly: slowing the breakdown of the body's own endocannabinoids, influencing serotonin and TRPV1 receptors, and affecting how certain enzymes metabolize other molecules.
That mechanism helps explain two things at once: why people report a wide range of subtle effects from CBD (because the ECS touches many systems), and why the effects are usually gentler and slower than those of pharmaceutical drugs targeting a single receptor.
Reading a Certificate of Analysis
The single most important quality signal in CBD is a recent third-party Certificate of Analysis. A real COA, issued by an independent ISO-accredited laboratory, shows three things: the actual cannabinoid potency (often different from the label), the absence of contaminants such as pesticides, heavy metals and residual solvents, and the absence of microbial contamination. If a brand cannot produce a COA matching the batch number on your bottle, the number on the label is essentially marketing.
Safety, side effects and risks
CBD is generally well tolerated, but it is not risk-free. Common side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth, lightheadedness, gastrointestinal upset and changes in appetite. Higher doses have been associated with measurable changes in liver enzymes. Pregnant or breastfeeding people, children, and anyone with significant liver disease should avoid over-the-counter CBD unless directly supervised by a clinician.
